Postmenopausal women with low bone density took annatto tocotrienol or placebo for 12 weeks. Markers of bone breakdown and oxidative stress fell with tocotrienol.
After menopause, bone is broken down faster than it is rebuilt. Blood markers can show this balance long before bone density changes on a scan.
Twelve weeks is short for bone, so the study measured turnover markers rather than fracture risk.
Key takeaway: Consistent with animal bone studies. Longer trials measuring bone density are the next step.
