About Tocotrienol
Vitamin E is a family of eight molecules, not one. Four tocopherols and four tocotrienols share the same head but differ in the tail. Tocotrienols were isolated in the 1960s and stayed in the background for decades.
Tocopherols
Saturated tail. Alpha-tocopherol is what most “vitamin E” labels mean.
Tocotrienols
Unsaturated tail with three double bonds. Shorter, more flexible, more mobile in membranes.
The chromanol head
Shared by all eight forms. This ring donates a hydrogen atom to neutralise lipid peroxyl radicals, which halts chain-reaction oxidation in cell membranes.
The unsaturated tail
Three double bonds make the tocotrienol tail shorter and kinked. It moves through saturated lipid layers more easily and spreads sideways faster.
Why it was overlooked
The liver’s α-TTP protein favours alpha-tocopherol, so early researchers assumed the other forms mattered less.
Where tocotrienols come from
Only a few plants hold meaningful amounts, and their isomer mix differs a lot.
| Source | Profile | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Annatto (Bixa orellana) | ~90% δ / 10% γ | The only known tocopherol-free source |
| Palm fruit (Elaeis guineensis) | ~75% T3 / 25% T | Balanced α- and γ-tocotrienol mix (TRF) |
| Rice bran (Oryza sativa) | ~50% T3 | Also rich in gamma-oryzanol |
| Barley, oats, wheat germ | Trace to low | Minor dietary contribution |

Tocotrienol vs tocopherol
| Attribute | Tocotrienol | Tocopherol |
|---|---|---|
| Side chain | Unsaturated (3 double bonds) | Saturated |
| Lipid-layer antioxidant power* | 40–60× higher | Baseline |
| Cholesterol pathway | Down-regulates HMG-CoA reductase | No effect |
| Western diet intake | Very low | Adequate |
