Tocotrienols lowered levels of HMG-CoA reductase, the main cholesterol-making enzyme, by speeding up its breakdown.
Statins block HMG-CoA reductase directly. This study found tocotrienols work differently: they reduce the amount of the enzyme after the cell has made it.
Tocopherols did not show the same effect, which marked a clear functional difference between the two halves of the vitamin E family.
Key takeaway: Explains why cholesterol became the first major area of tocotrienol research. Human trial results have been mixed.
